Stephen Galvin
LTCL BA BMus MMus [Honours] Diploma Teaching Musician Stephen Galvin is a qualified, experienced and registered teacher, musician and someone who loves playing bass. " It is simply the coolest instrument."
He started playing bass aged eleven performing in a school band, then through secondary school, playing garage bands and joining Gratis Kinetic in 1975 with Bruce Aitken, Greg Mooney and others. He played residencies at Queenstown's Skyline restaurant, Christchurch's Carlton Hotel with Cyril Edwards, the Gables Auckland with Maree Steinway, and countless jazz gigs then began teaching Guitar and Bass at the New Zealand Guitar Academy in 1981. Stephen established his own studio in 1984 and since then has played literally thousands of songs, gigs and sessions for clients. He also wrote two musicals, taught Music at secondary school played with The Auckland Concert Orchestra, Prohibition Big Band with Trevor Thwaites, The Residentz, Santiago Band Auckland, The Stevie G Band, West City Jazz Orchestra, Parnazz and others including the bass chair with the Albany High School production of Chicago (2023). Stephen now teaches in four Auckland secondary schools. His approach to teaching is to share the joy of making music within a structured supportive environment. Stephen has recorded several albums including New Zealand Jazz Modal Behaviour playing fretless bass, fretted bass and guitar. The CD is available at abcstudioz.com
