LTCL BA BMus MMus [Honours] Diploma Teaching
Stephen Galvin is a qualified, experienced and registered teacher, musician and someone who loves playing bass.
" It is simply the coolest instrument."
He started playing bass aged eleven performing in a school band, then through secondary school, playing garage bands and joining Gratis Kinetic in 1975 with Bruce Aitken, Greg Mooney and others. He played residencies at Queenstown's Skyline restaurant, Christchurch's Carlton Hotel with Cyril Edwards, the Gables Auckland with Maree Steinway, and countless jazz gigs before teaching at the New Zealand Guitar Academy in 1981. Stephen established his own studio in 1984 and since then has played literally thousands of gigs and sessions for clients. He also wrote two musicals, taught Music at Secondary school and now divides his time between his Parnell studio, playing shows with The Residentz, Santiago Band Auckland, The Stevie G Band, The Astronauts, West City Jazz Orchestra and others, and teaching in three South Auckland secondary schools. His approach to teaching is to share the joy of making music within a structured supportive environment.
"A good bass-player needs to possess technical skill, good listening, memory and music-reading skills, the ability to improvise, create music and groove with style and a sense of fun, making music with people. That is what it is all about."
